A new edition especially for Advent and Christmas in this best-selling series of gift books God's Little Book of Christmas brings the childlike spirit of the season back into your heart, amid all the busyness. 'Christmas is a bridge - use it to restore lost relationships, renew failing ones and cross over to make new ones.' As children we look forward to Christmas as a time of great excitement, but, as adults, the frenetic preparations can overwhelm us, distracting us from the joy of the season. For many this is one of the most wonderful times of the year. While today, unfortunately, Christmas has become overly commercialised, the real reason for the season will always remain. Christ is the saviour of the world. He left the adoration and praise of his angels to receive insult and rejection from his own created. He suffered and died so that we can have life. Why did He do all this? To save a dying world from the consequences of sin, to give us hope and an eternal future. Christ came because He loves us. Christmas is really about acknowledging what Christ has done, giving thanks that he came and looking forward to a time when he will return so that one day we can all share in his heavenly riches.

The Age of Social Democracy - Norway and Sweden in the Twentieth Century (Paperback): Francis Sejersted The Age of Social Democracy - Norway and Sweden in the Twentieth Century (Paperback)
Francis Sejersted; Edited by Madeleine B. Adams; Translated by Richard Daly
R981 Discovery Miles 9 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A history of how Norway and Sweden became the envy of the modern world This is the history of how two countries on the northern edge of Europe built societies in the twentieth century that became objects of inspiration and envy around the world. Francis Sejersted, one of Scandinavia's leading historians, tells how Norway and Sweden achieved a rare feat by realizing grand visions of societies that combine stability, prosperity, and social welfare. It is a history that holds many valuable lessons today, at a time of renewed interest in the Scandinavian model. The book tells the story of social democracy from the separation of Norway and Sweden in 1905 through the end of the century, tracing its development from revolutionary beginnings through postwar triumph, as it became a hegemonic social order that left its stamp on every sector of society, the economy, welfare, culture, education, and family. The book also tells how in the 1980s, partly in reaction to the strong state, a freedom and rights revolution led to a partial erosion of social democracy. Yet despite the fracturing of consensus and the many economic and social challenges facing Norway and Sweden today, the achievement of their welfare states remains largely intact.

Working Knowledge in a Globalizing World - From Work to Learning, from Learning to Work (Paperback): LIV Mjelde, Richard Daly Working Knowledge in a Globalizing World - From Work to Learning, from Learning to Work (Paperback)

Vocational education is an interface between practical and theoretical knowledge involving both work-related general knowledge and practical knowledge generated at work. The contributions cover many features of VET (Vocational Education and Training) in a global world. Part one examines VET's work-relatedness as education marked by social or group (rather than individual) dynamics, and is inductive and practice-oriented. The second part of this volume critically examines features of vocational education policy that are central to a number of present-day global social and economic concerns in light of changes in apprenticeship policies, information technology, structural adjustment, crises in youth culture, and shifting regional political and economic agendas. Global VET concerns are presented from national conditions of Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, Cuba, Denmark, Germany, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.

The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Hunters and Gatherers (Paperback): Richard B. Lee, Richard Daly The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Hunters and Gatherers (Paperback)
Richard B. Lee, Richard Daly
R1,865 Discovery Miles 18 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Hunting and gathering is humanity's first and most successful adaptation. Until 12,000 years ago, all humanity lived this way. Surprisingly, in an increasingly urbanized and technological world dozens of hunting and gathering societies have persisted and thrive worldwide, resilient in the face of change, their ancient ways now combined with the trappings of modernity. The Encyclopedia is divided into three parts. The first contains case studies, by leading experts, of over fifty hunting and gathering peoples, in seven major world regions. There is a general introduction and an archaeological overview for each region. Part II contains thematic essays on prehistory, social life, gender, music and art, health, religion, and indigenous knowledge. The final part surveys the complex histories of hunter-gatherers' encounters with colonialism and the state, and their ongoing struggles for dignity and human rights as part of the worldwide movement of indigenous peoples.

Our Box Was Full - An Ethnography for the Delgamuukw Plaintiffs (Paperback, New Ed): Richard Daly Our Box Was Full - An Ethnography for the Delgamuukw Plaintiffs (Paperback, New Ed)
Richard Daly
R960 Discovery Miles 9 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For the Gitksan and Witsuwit'en peoples of northwest British Columbia, the land is invested with meaning that goes beyond simple notions of property or sustenance. Considered both a food box and a storage box of history and wealth, the land plays a central role in their culture, survival, history, and identity. In Our Box Was Full, Richard Daly explores the centrality of this notion in the determination of Aboriginal rights with particular reference to the landmark Delgamuukw case that occupied the British Columbia courts from 1987 to 1997. Called as an expert witness for the Aboriginal plaintiffs, Daly, an anthropologist, was charged with helping the Gitksan and Witsutwit'en to "prove they existed," and to make the case for Aboriginal self-governance. In order to do this, Daly spent several years documenting their institutions, system of production and exchange, dispute settlement, and proprietorship before Pax Britannica and colonization. His conclusions, which were originally rejected by Justice MacEachern, were that the plaintiffs continue to live out their rich and complex heritage today albeit under very different conditions from those of either the pre-contact or fur trade eras. Our Box Was Full provides fascinating insight into the Delgamuukw case and sheds much-needed light on the role of anthropology in Aboriginal rights litigation. A rich, compassionate, and original ethnographic study, the book situates the plaintiff peoples within the field of forager studies, and emphasizes the kinship and gift exchange features that pervade these societies even today. It will find an eager audience among scholars and students of anthropology, Native studies, law, and history.
